I think after my wizard died I tweaked the script to make future iterations more aggressive, and apparently that paid off. I don't think I ever saw him willingly melee anything even though he could have handled it, preferring instead to kite and funnel things through corridors and diligently pick up all the dropped ammo. He used a LOT of other ranged attacks too, like bows and throwing stuff, which I always skipped. Sometimes it was so hairy I couldn't watch and have to walk away, but he always survived, diving in headfirst and spamming the doorways with whatever ball explodey crap high-level priests have, run away and rest, then jump back in and keep going because his speed was like +10 or something ridiculous. It was impressive watching him take out those big empty special rooms full of dragons or umber hulks or whatever. I had never really played a priest before, opting usually for Wizard in *band and Moria. At the tail end of it he had max stats though so good on him for his persistence. For example, once he hit a certain character or dungeon level, he decided it was time to scum the town stores for stat-up potions, and man that took literal months. Turns out, being overly overly cautious pays off, and the borgs have no concept of time so they don't get impatient. I used to watch that borg a lot more because it was my first high level, and I learned a lot about Angband just from watching. Not sure how he died since the script doesn't pause, it just keeps going whenever there's a death. My first good borg was an Elf Wizard, level 37. I had it set to my screensaver, which everyone at work got a kick out of. Angband borg was right up my alley, and is still actively maintained too. I've always loved watching AI play against itself in video games though, which is how I stumbled across the borg scripts for roguelikes. I never did play Angband proper until I started messing with borg scripts, (I preferred Zangband back in the day).
